Beijing Symphony Orchestra’s “Symphonic Coding” Embraces Immersive Sound and AI

The boundary between art and science dissolved on December 19th at the Science and Art Building of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Debuting under the title “Symphonic Coding,” this technologically inspired suite by the Beijing Symphony Orchestra tapped into futuristic concepts like biological sciences, aerospace technology, and quantum mechanics. Featuring electronic music, AI-driven composition, and dynamic audio-visual interactions, the performance offered a prime example of how orchestral tradition can blend seamlessly with state-of-the-art technology.

A Perfect Pairing

A highlight of “Symphonic Coding” was its immersive 7.1.4-channel setup—realized through the powerful Astro Spatial Audio servers from the Netherlands. Designing a perfect spatial environment in an elongated venue was no simple task. However, EZPro’s team employed advanced algorithms within Astro Spatial Audio to accommodate unconventional loudspeaker placements, ensuring optimal acoustic performance and lifelike positioning of each musical layer.

Art and Technology in Harmony

Ultimately, “Symphonic Coding” proved that the Beijing Symphony Orchestra can collaborate with industry-leading partners like EZPro and immersive technologies from Astro Spatial Audio to break new ground in the concert experience. By marrying classical music with advanced immersive audio, AI innovation, and interactive visuals, this production highlights a future where the symphony hall becomes a frontier for boundless creative exploration.

From AI to Orchestral Excellence

Sound Designer Zhang Yilong described the performance as a “sophisticated system combining immersive reinforcement with traditional electronic music diffusion.” The goal was to handle not only orchestral monitoring and reinforcement but also real-time electronic music production, interactive generation, and AI-powered audiovisual elements. The flexibility and user-friendliness of the system allowed for ongoing refinements during rehearsals, culminating in a live show that integrated the latest technologies without any operational setbacks.
